Pathways Blog - 24.4.26
Walking through the Pathways site this week, I have seen some excellent learning on display, but also recognise the progress of pupils social and emotional development.
Pupils don’t always make the right decisions, that’s part of growing up. If we don’t make a mistake, how do we learn? But what I have seen this week is pupils making better decisions to situations where previously, they have reacted in the wrong way.
I have also seen pupils support each other in offering advice and guidance for their peers. This is a common theme at Pathways, and not something new, but it still gives me great pleasure to see the hard work that staff do with our learners pay off in real life situations.
This week we’ve had pupils rambling the local countryside on their Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, take the tram to step back in time at the Imperial War Museum and learn what it might have been like to experience Mount Vesuvius erupt in AD 79 Pompeii. More details of these will be in future blogs.
We have also welcomed families of Year 9 pupils for tours around the site in readiness for September 2026. I had the privilege of showing some families around to show Pathways on a regular day. Pupils were welcoming and answered parent questions, and they showed what it was like to learn at Pathways. Parental voice has been positive, with “calm environment”, “polite pupils”, “excitement” and “feeling reassured” being common themes.

Friday Football
Due to unforeseen circumstances, Friday football was unfortunately cancelled. However, the day quickly turned into a fantastic opportunity as we hosted an exciting football tournament at Madhlo alongside Active8 College and staff.
All the boys demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and enthusiasm throughout the game, working exceptionally well as part of their teams. It was great to see such positive energy and teamwork on display.
Well done on Winning 10 – 2 ⚽️🏆

CL1
CL1 have had a brilliant week packed with lots of exciting learning. The pupils really enjoyed reading Killer Croc and worked hard to sequence the story, showing great understanding of the key events. In maths, we have also started our new topic on fractions and CL1 have been fantastic at getting to grips with new vocabulary and ideas. Well done, CL1 – keep up the excellent work!

CL2
Today some of the students in CL2 visited Oldham Library. The weather is glorious so we walked to the library using our road safety knowledge.
The students who did not have a library card all enrolled today and they all managed to borrow a book from the library to read in their English session.
Whilst we were there today there was a Family & baby group who where singing nursery rhymes and using musical instruments. The class really enjoyed listening and participated in some of the singing.

Pedals, Pots and Plenty of Fun!
Last week, CL5 visited Alexandra Park with Wheels for All and enjoyed an outdoor cycling adventure. There were plenty of smiles as the students explored the park, and some made the wise decision to walk their bikes up the hill when it became too steep. Although not for everyone, most students loved the experience and wanted to do it again!
This week, the fun took a creative turn as CL5 partnered with CL3 for a clay workshop. Students got hands-on experience making clay pots and took great pride in their creations. With their growing confidence, they are now moving on to even more exciting projects, such as figures, plates, and cupcake pots.
The Leisure topic has already been filled with fun, creativity, and new experiences, and there is plenty more to look forward to in the coming weeks.

Science
Recently in Science we have been learning about light. Looking at how light changes direction when it enters something new, such as glass or water.
Students have used glass blocks to view the bending of light. They’ve also investigated what happens when light passes through a glass prism to create their very own ‘indoor’ rainbows!
We recreated Issac Newton’s spinning colour wheel to show how all the colours of a rainbow mix to form white light.
