Mrs T's Blog (16.5.25)

It's yet another busy busy week here at Roman Road. The students have been working so hard, despite the heat and sunshine.

Reflecting on last week’s VE Day – we were so proud of the students and celebration of such an important event. Change of routine is so hard for some of our young people and when we organise events, we must think really carefully around informing students and preparing them for what’s coming.

Today we opened our doors to the ACE Centre as we hosted the ‘Communication Works’ Event. This is the third time we have run this event and today we have welcomed over 100 delegates to our amazing school, plus guest speakers and the organisers – the team from the ACE Centre.

The event was opened by Laura Brown (@spinning world of autism). Laura talked about the struggles of children with ASD and communication. My favourite slide presented looked at all behaviour is a form of communication. Something which we hold inherent here at New Bridge.

Laura spoke about her son – Ethan and how through the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) unlocked a whole world for Ethan and his family. There was a beautiful clip shown where Ethan was able to ask him mum to see the penguins again whilst at a visit to the Zoo.

So what does it look like for us here at New Bridge.

Well, today was not just about external exhibitors as were able to showcase the amazing work we do here with Assistive Technology.

Our learning walks went into several areas of the school – Miss Warner and the IB1 learners, Miss Bingley and the use of tech in AB, Mr Garry – our ICT guru, plus Mr Drake demonstrated the use of Cosmo switches. Mr Flanagan, Miss Ward and Mr New port provided visitors with information about our school and how we use technology to support learning.

A huge ‘shout out ‘needs to go to our premises and admin teams who make events like this go so smoothly .

And the biggest ‘shout out ‘goes to our students – who were just amazing. As they always are.

In addition to the walks – our students, alongside Mrs Lenge managed a café area where visitors to the school were able to have a drink and a bite to eat.

Whist it’s been a busy day, it has been brilliant and next week shows no signs of slowing down.

On Wednesday we have Parents Evening. If families and carers need any support with ensuring appointments are made – please let the school office know.

That’s it for me. Tonight, the team are attending the Oldham POINT Annual Conference and Market place and Passion for Parent Awards. I'mm sure it’s going to be a brilliant evening. And on Sunday, my youngest daughter is running the Manchester 10 k for JD Foundation.

Next week we break for half term (already...)
