The Modern Foreign Language taught at New Bridge is German. Our student’s learn
to recognize the language when they hear it and hold simple conversations about everyday
events. They also learn about the different cultures of Germany and other European
countries. Students can sit nationally accredited examinations. A number of our
young people have enjoyed visiting Germany and taking part in exchange projects with
a German school.
The main foreign language to be taught in New Bridge is German. There will also be the opportunity for some pupils to experience French at a rudimentary level. In Kaskenmoor School pupils learn French and Spanish and opportunities will be sought, for those pupils for whom it is appropriate, to extend their language learning in depth and breadth.
Learning even the rudiments of a Modern Foreign Language enables pupils to extend themselves linguistically and to learn and demonstrate new skills. This is in line with our general aim of encouraging each pupil to develop his / her full potential in all areas.
The study of MFL enables our students to develop their social skills by providing a new context for communication and interaction. It introduces an area of study in which they have not previously failed and enables them to begin at the same level as their friends and family in mainstream schools. The study of MFL also encourages awareness of other peoples, places and cultures and this is in line with the general aims of the school. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of learning a language for a real purpose.
Following the success of recent trips to Germany by school groups from Park Dean, links have been established with a German school similar to our own. Opportunities exist and hopefully will be exploited to add tangible purpose to language learning for many of our pupils. This could be in the form of letter writing, shared project work, e-mailing, internet, conferencing etc.. and for some an international exchange or visit.
