New Bridge Pathways

Students at New Bridge Pathways celebrated Safer Internet Day this week by looking at how technology has changed in recent years, how we use the internet and what we can do to change the way we use the internet in a more positive way. 

Safer Internet Day

We are proud of how well the students have engaged in Safer Internet Day, and together we will try to make the internet a better place for everyone. 

 

KS4 Lumenus 

 

This week Lumenus have had the amazing experience of watching the musical Hamilton, at the Palace Theatre Manchester. 

KS4 Lumenus are currently in the process of completing their Bronze Arts Award. As part of their accreditation, students have had to explore the arts as an audience member and create evidence of attending an arts event. Luckily, this happened to be Hamilton.  Lumenus also had the opportunity to participate in a workshop after the performance, where they had the privilege of meeting the whole cast and stage team. 

Students have written a review of their experience to submit as evidence for their accreditation: -  

My review of Hamilton  

"Hamilton is about a man called Alexander Hamilton and he was born in the Caribbean. He grew up as an orphan. He moved to America to study in law and became a lawyer, later he became George Washington’s right-hand man and the first sectary of the treasury in America. I really enjoyed watching Hamilton.  I liked every single bit of it from the performers using the same movements in different scenes. Some fast, some slow and then combining them together.  Through rapping and singing they were telling the story which I thought was brilliant. The lighting it was used to change the setting. It was really clever how they used the lighting. They brought props in with them during the songs, they never stopped once to bring them in, and they brought a table and a bunch of chairs. We heard the performers and the music everywhere in the theatre. There were tons of speakers around us. The costumes were brilliant. They looked wonderful and when the performers put them on, it made me feel like I was in the past. I liked how they used a lot of freeze frames and the revolving stage. I've never seen one before and it was massive, and I really loved how they did a rewinding scene. And how they did it all again just to get another person’s point of view. They also mimed in some parts of the musical. I give this musical a 5 out of 5-star review, I recommend watching the musical.  A warning! There is swearing in it, so it may not be suitable for young kid. Loved it! Loved it! Loved it! Would see it again."

"My Review of Hamilton. The show was about a man called Alexander Hamilton that grow up in the Caribbean and was an orphan that moved to America and joined the war. The show follows the life story of Alexander Hamilton one of the founding fathers of the United States. I like the musical because it had dancing and different songs. I like the dancing because it was street dancing and lots of popping. The dancers were in sync, which shows that they rehearsed a lot. I liked the songs because they were different styles: rapping battles, hip hop.  They were easy to understand what they were singing about. They were not many props in the show. Mostly a table and lots of chairs. They brought them on the stage while they were all dancing, which I like because they didn’t stop the show to set up the stage. The costumes were beautiful because they were bright and looked nice. My favourite costumes were the sister's costumes because they were beautiful long dresses. The lighting was very bright and colourful with different shapes and sizes. The lighting was used to transport us to different sets and scenes. I would recommend only adults and teens watching the Hamilton show, because there is a little bit of swearing in it and I don’t think it’s appropriate for little kids. I would give the show a five out of five stars because I really liked the musical and the story that it tells, and I would like to see it again with my family."

"Hamilton is the story of one of America’s founding fathers, Alexander Hamilton. An immigrant from the West Indies he became George Washingtons right-hand man during the revolutionary war and was the new nation’s first treasury secretary. 

Hamiltons show was at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. 

I liked Hamilton because the story was told though rapping and singing this made it a bit difficult to follow so I suggest you read up about it first. The is really trending because of the rapping and hip-hop. 

The best bit of the show was the scenes then they re-wind. This was done by the actors moving backwards in slow- motion and the stage also moved in a revolving motion Which worked really well. 

Costumes — my favourite costumes were the dresses of the sisters they looked like they were really old fashioned perfect for the part and characters.  

Lightning — The lighting was used to show different places in the performance, instead of changing the set. It felt like you were moving to a different place in the story. 

Sound/Music – The music was hip-hop. Rapping was used to tell us the story. It was hard to follow because it was too fast for me to understand and not very clear.  

Dancing— the type of dancing in the show was hip-hop and street dance and some ballroom. The dancers did a lot of body popping and locking. The dancing repeated lots of the moves but it was really good.  

The cast were suited for the roles.  Hamilton was played by Shaq Taylor.  I think he did I good job, but I thought he should have been more involved with the dancing. His acting was very good, he was really clear on stage. One thing I didn’t like was the way he didn’t showed that he was sad. I think he didn’t show enough emotion.  

Everyone would enjoy it but especially people who like rapping and hip- hop.  I don’t think children under 12 years should go because of the bad language. I would go again but would enjoy it more if the show was shorter, I think it was too long. I would give it 4 out of 5 stars.  

Lots of rapping and dancing. Good if you like that kind of thing. "

Hamilton review 

"Hamilton is a musical about the life about Alexander Hamilton who was an orphan from the Caribbean & came to New York to become a lawyer & the right-hand man of George Washington. 

I thought the musical was absolutely amazing & very powerful. Mostly because of how the tone of their voices gives me a clear idea of how they are feeling in each scene, since I couldn’t clearly see their facial expressions because I was sat far away.  I found the musical very interesting & fun. 

Stage set up/ lighting/ sound - 10/10  

The scenery was very good. I like how they changed the lighting & props to give us an idea that they’re in another place. I thought the sound was perfect; not too loud & not too quiet. 

Music/ singing - 8/10 

The music was great & the singing was gorgeous, but I felt like I missed some plot points when they were rapping it very quickly. I enjoyed the instrumentals that set the mood and theme of this musical. Even though the music is upbeat, it still gives off early 1800s vibes. 

Dancing - 10/10 

I absolutely loved the dancing; it really made this experience more enjoyable. I loved it when in the song “Satisfied” when they said “rewind” they did the dance but in reverse to the beginning again. I also loved the freeze frames & how still the performers were. They were all very good dancers. 

I think this could be a good musical for students in college or people over the age of 13, because it has   information about Alexander Hamilton for history lessons. There is a lot of bad language, sexual references, violence and some of the scenes could upset or offend audience members. 

I would love to see this musical again. I give this musical 10/10 "

Community Living Personal Progress +  

Busy, Busy, Busy is how to describe this week in CLPP+. 

We have been working hard on our Asdan Qualification -topic Good Health. Students have been learning about equipment that health professionals use and matching them to the relevant roles. The focus this week has been the dentist. Students have been learning about visiting a dentist and what to expect. They have also been working on practicing their own dental hygiene by learning about the importance of brushing our teeth. 

Students have had a fab time in our sensory and mindfulness sessions. Water beads, painting activities and parachute games proved popular and fun. 

XIN-NAIAN KUAI LE (Happy New Year) 

We have been celebrating Chinese New Year. Students have identified a range of ingredients and communicated their preferences, they have practised their fine motor skills (chopping and grating) and learnt safety skills and rules when preparing the ingredients and using the hob. 

Chinese Noodles with veg ……..delicious. 

Finally, it was Daisy’s 16th Birthday, so we helped her celebrate with a yummy cake.

 Digi 1

This week in Digi 1 some students were fortunate enough to take a trip to the theatre to watch Hamilton – what an amazing experience! 

On Wednesday we had a tour of Oldham College, where students were able to look around the campus, learn about the range of courses and options available to them for year 12.  All the students were very well behaved and a credit to the school.

Students have also continued to develop their social skills by engaging with their peers in games.  It is amazing to see how much our students have developed these and create meaningful friendships since starting New Bridge Pathways in September.   

 

CommLivSport

Community Living Sport have had another brilliant week. They have tackled a variety of new skills in both Maths and English. In English, they have been looking at different scenarios and how to deal with them in an appropriate way, making good choices and bad choices. They have also been looking at creating a balanced argument, finding reasons for and against a subject. The boys did extremely well and thought deeply about actions and reasons. In maths, we have started to focus on time, trying to read the time in 5 minute intervals.   

During our pathway days, we have been focussing on basketball. The boys have really developed and their passing and dribbling has really come on. In the afternoons, we go down to Marvin’s gym for boxing. Here, the boys are really put through their paces, punching heavy bags, running laps of the building and really working up a sweat. It is a very quiet bus journey back to school as the boys are worn out 😊.

We have got one more week till half term and then the boys have got a well deserved week's rest coming up. They can’t wait!

This week within Community Living 5 the students have had a busy week. They have worked extremely hard on their pathway subject work of “preparation for work” and “people who help us”.

They have also visited Oldham College to see what options are available to them as part of their preparation for work module.

Within PE the class have been developing their basketball skills of passing (chest and bounce) and shooting using the BEEF technique. They all have had an extremely positive week and are developing the skills to support them in the next stage of their educational journey.

This week Community Living Tec we took a trip to Oldham Library to visit a Job Fair. We have been talking about employability and our options for the future. 

What a food for thought.  

In food tech lesson this week we have been looking at food lifestyle choices. We have looked at plant-based food diets. 

The students sampled a variety of different products. 

They all had a try with mixed reactions.
