New Bridge College Blog - 16.2.24

Maths

It has been a busy half term for our students regarding their maths and our main topics have been measurements, probability, and ratio. The students really enjoy this time of year as they get to put their knowledge into action and complete a range of practical activities.

First on our list was understanding how estimation is different from guessing and is an important skill to learn when considering quantities and amounts. This was helpful when we looked at the differences between area and perimeter and our students enjoyed using the trundle wheel to measure the various classrooms and corridors around the college.

Next, we worked looked at metric and imperial measurements to measure our heights. We measured our height using centimetres then converted the numbers into feet and inches. And I would like to thank all the students for their considerations to their peers. Its quite difficult to measure your own height and it was lovely to have students volunteer to offer their assistance. They then had to take measurements and design their own tables to input the data, a good exercise for some much need ruler practice.

We then focused on making truffles. This involved the students following a recipe then working together to weigh out all the ingredients. They had a choice of working in grams or ounces and most preferred using ounces on the scales. But all of them enjoyed eating the truffles.

It had been a fun couple of weeks in maths but this week, we have been more focused and formal as the students have been completing mock assessments and again, I would like to thank the students for showing great resilience and effort when completing their tests. Here is some feedback from our students regarding their progression so far.

On making the truffles Edward said “It was a realistic take on maths as we actually learnt how to measure”

Kian said, “The topics have been interesting and have helped me prepare for my exams” and Charlie said, “I feel I’m getting more confident solving exam style questions on area and perimeter”.

Let’s keep up the good work everyone and enjoy the half term break.

Macauley the Poet

We had a very exciting day on Friday at NBC. Macauley finally received a copy of the book in which his fantastic poem has been published.

We are so proud of you Macauley (and also slightly worried now we might be out of our jobs)...

Well done!

About Me - Matt (Digi)

"I’m Matt, I work in Digi and I’ve been around for about 7/8 years now - I’ve lost count.

My first job when leaving school at 16 was as an apprentice engraver (via the then highly popular among employers, YTS scheme) at Oldham Athletic - even though I’d rather watch crown green bowls than 90 minutes of football.  As staff, we were allowed to have 2 free tickets to home games, and I would regularly sell mine to my cousins or friends.  I was soon “persuaded” to take on the voluntary role of club mascot Chaddy Owl at home games when, back then in the late 80’s the costume was more of a rug with wings!  However, this role didn’t last very long after I had an altercation with a couple of away fans who tried to drag me into the stand.  It seemed that defending myself was frowned upon by my boss the Commercial Manager and I was immediately “stripped of my wings”.  At least this meant I didn’t have to work against my will on matchdays!

I live with my wife Sue – and that’s it.  No children, no pets – I sometimes think that’s the reason that I still have my hair, and anyway, children and pets would just get in the way of my main interest (more on that later). However, I do have a very large family with LOTS of cousins, and we meet up regularly for a pint or four.

Outside of work my main interest is music.  I’ve been playing guitar in various bands of varying styles (60’s rock n roll, pop, rock, metal etc) for around 35/40 years (yet I still require a daytime job!) and have been with my current band, Parcel O’ Rogues for around 6/7 years.  We’re a 7 – piece Irish band who play mostly in the Northwest and put our own “edgy” slant on traditional and some not-so-traditional Irish tunes.  Why not check out our social media pages?

My favourite place on the planet is Whitby!  Easily accessible by car - no check-ins, customs or any of that malarky – and on arrival you’re greeted by beautiful sea-views, cliff top walks and quaint fishing cottages.  And of course, as well as the chip shops there are also the many traditional real ale pubs, micro pubs and bars that Whitby has to offer, all within walking distance of each other.  To top this off there is the revered Whitby Brewery up near the Abbey who brew a particular favourite dark ale of mine – the brooding, velvety Whitby Jet Black!!

That’s all about me.  Cheers."
