Learning Centre Blog (2.2.24)

Weekly blog 02.02.24

There's loads going on at the Learning Centre at the moment.

Back in October, Oldham Youth Council contacted schools about the youth council elections, and a consultation called ‘Make Your Mark’. Each year they ask schools & Colleges to consult with their young people about what issues need dealing with on a UK wide basis and a local Oldham one.

Historically this has been mainly within mainstream settings however in recent years, Chris Lewis from the youth service has provided more user-friendly versions that Learning Centre students can complete.

The process involves facilitation of a discussion about the topics and issues in form time and then students vote for one national topic and one local issue) by. Teachers then count & submit the number of votes, each topic and issue received.

This week classes have started the process of voting. Miss Kindon's class have been first off the mark!

"Nurture group students have discussed and voted on  National Topics and Local Issues.

Voting

The most important National Topic to students was 'Health and Wellbeing'.

The most important Local Issue was 'More needs to be done about violent crime including knife crime'."

It's absolutely vital that the voices of our students are heard, valued and acted upon as they have unique views and experiences which often go unheard outside of their schools/ colleges or homes.

I hope, that by being involved in such a process our students feel valued and empowered.

This year Oldham Youth Council want to break their record participation of 16,500.

Please find below the National & Local topics being voted for.

I would encourage parents and carers to talk to students about which topics are important to them, and hopefully their voices will be heard.

Continuing with student voice, today was the closing date for representatives from the Student Council to put themselves forward as Learning Centre Student Advocate. I look forward to announcing the successful candidate next week.

Each week at the Learning Centre the students have ICT with Miss Wood (Lucy).

"Over the last term and a half, I have been so impressed with the students attitude to learning and their enthusiasm for the subject.

Our Christmas Enterprise of making monthly 2024 calendars was such a success and I’ve loved hearing where the students have placed them in their homes.

This half term we are continuing to focus on our Qualification work. Some students are focusing on Video Software and making amazing videos all about attending the Learning Centre as a student.

Other classes are working on the desktop publishing unit and creating a magazine linked to their special interest. I can’t wait to see the final outcomes (however I have included some sneak previews!)

We also have students who are working on their digital skills, such as being able to use the mouse to click and drag and being able to independently log on to their own computer.

I have also been amazed at the levels of progress Sehrib has been making using his listening skills and working on touch typing. Keep up the good work!

Have a great weekend.
